| The
Southern Maine Library District, which is comprised of 70 libraries in
York, Cumberland, and selected towns in Oxford counties, is hosting the
third annual summer reading program for their member libraries, collaborating
with The Seashore Trolley Museum, in Kennebunkport.
Libraries
will celebrate their summer reading programs with a party for all participants
at The Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport on Friday, August 22, 2003.
The Trolley
Museum has generously offered a free admission ticket for all reading program
participants, and half-priced tickets for up to two adults accompanying
each of the participants.
Tickets to
the Trolley Museum are valid for the whole day, allow the ticket holder
access to all Museum facilities that are open to the public, and are good
for an unlimited number of rides throughout the day on the restored, historic
electric streetcars.
Our featured
guests this year are World Cup Champion Julie Parisien, Maine Author Lynn
Plourde, and Singer & Puppeteer Lesley Smith. Other performers
and activities include Magician Steve Charette, “Curious George”, and the “Backback
Players” from Deering High School in Portland.
There will
also be a GIGANTIC Scholastic Book Fair that will benefit the Consolidated
School library in Kennebunkport and the Trolley Museum, also there will
face painting, a moon bounce, balloon sculptures and trolley rides all
day long. Grilled food, lobster rolls, and refreshments will also
be available .
Brand new
this year is “The Library Gallery,” a site for highlighting your library’s
summer reading program. Each SMLD library will be offered poster space
to display photos, themes, and other details. Gallery visitors will get
a chance to vote on their favorite -- with a prize for the winning library.
This year
the celebration also includes a special postal cancellation aboard historic
railway postal trolley car #108. Trolley car #108 was built in 1904 and
delivered mail between York and Kittery for more than a decade. The special
postal cancellation commemorates the 3rd annual Reading Celebration with
an image of car #108 and the logo of the Southern Maine Library District.
This event
is also open to the general public, at the normal admission prices to the
trolley museum (Click Here For Regular Prices). |
