Seashore Trolley Museum Celebrating 60 Years
The Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport Maine is the country's first and foremost transportation museum. This preeminent museum will celebrate its 60th Anniversary this summer with major events, activities and free commemorative souvenirs for every guest. The Museum will open for its 60th season on Saturday May 1, 1999, and every visitor will receive a special souvenir pin. A giant Anniversary Celebration at this one of a kind living history museum is slated for July 5th.
The Seashore Trolley Museum is the worlds oldest & largest museum of "its type". It is home to the "National Collection of Historic American Streetcars", housing trolleys and streetcars that once plied the streets of Americas greatest cities, plus many more from around the world. Authentically restored antique electric trolleys carry passengers daily through the Maine countryside on a 4-mile guided tour. The guided tour continues into the exhibit "barns" displaying "a century of streetcars" (1873-1973) and through the world famous restoration shop where the trolleys are lovingly (and meticulously) restored. The Seashore Trolley Museum offers a nostalgic journey into the past and a living memory of the grand trolley era for all ages to enjoy.
Groups and families of all ages delight in this fascinating experience as they tour the orientation room and learn how our grandparents traveled before the automobile became king. Visitors can explore the museum's exhibit barn and even be a "Motorman" and drive one of the 20-ton trolleys. Everyone can experience the power of the electric motors as the restored trolley car pulls away from the platform.
