  A Birthday Party - for Trolleys

 

August 5th  -  Car #31, the Museum’s flagship car and a “Save America’s Treasures” Project, will turn 100 this year! Boston Elevated Railway Car #396 will also turn 100. Other milestones include a trolley car turning 95, another 90. Three cars are turning 75, three more will be 70!  These are just a few of the trolleys celebrating birthdays at the Seashore Trolley Museum on Saturday August 5th.  The day will be highlighted by a ceremonial Cake cutting for these cars, many of whom are looking better than ever this year thanks to the hard work of Museum volunteers.

Connecticut Co. Car #1391, a 15 bench open car and one of the “Yale Bowl Fleet” will be celebrating its 90th year of operation and will be available for rides on August 5th. 

A few of the other cars on display celebrating significant birthdays include: Oshawa Railway locomotive #300 from Ontario who will be 80. Philadelphia & Westchester Traction Co. Car #62, Blackpool Corp. Lancashire England Car #144 (a double decker), and New South Wales Government Tramways Sydney Australia Car #1700 will all be 75. Those turning 70 include Cedar Rapids and Iowa City Car #118, Montreal Tramways Car #2652 and United Railway and Electric Co., Baltimore Maryland Car #6144. Glasgow Corporation Transport’s, Glasgow Scotland Car #1274, a Mark 1 Coronation class streamlined double decker, will be 60 years old!

The Seashore Trolley Museum is the world’s oldest & largest museum of mass transit vehicles and is home to the National Collection of American Streetcars.   Located on Log Cabin Road in Kennebunkport Maine, the museum houses trolleys and streetcars that once plied the streets of America’s greatest cities, plus many more from around the world.
