Former Lehigh Valley Transit Company (LVT) motorman Miles Wert visited the Museum on June 9, 2007 celebrating his 90th birthday, all dressed as if he was showing up for work. Mr. Wert's daughter called the Museum setting up a reservation for the Be A Motorman Program as a birthday gift for him. An instructor took Miles, accompanied by his family, out on Twin Cities Rapid Transit #1267 and upon return the instructor commented, "He operated like he was just doing it yesterday."
For an added surprise and tribute to the years of service on the LVT, Museum volunteers shuffled Lehigh Valley Transit #1030 out from its display spot in Highwood Barn. Positioned next to where Mr. Wert's trolley would be arriving, Miles was pleasantly surprised to see a familiar sight upon his arrival back from his Be A Motorman trip. He commented, "I never operated the lightweights, but I did get to ride them and they were nice." Volunteers treated Miles and his family to a short trip on the lavish Liberty Bell Limited, taking Mr. Wert on a trip back down memory lane. After the ride he sat and chatted with volunteers about some of the things he experienced while working in Pennsylvania on the LVT. It was truly a day we will all remember, including motorman Miles Wert.
