York Utilities Company #88

York Utilities Co. #88

The museum includes in its collection the last streetcar to operate in regular transit service in the State of Maine, No. 88 of the York Utilities Company. This car was one of two built by Wason in 1926 for the East Taunton, Massachusetts, Street Railway. The car is very similar to a fleet of 30 cars designed and built the same year for Providence. It differs chiefly by having short end platforms with two leaf doors, and rattan seats instead of the wood seats used in the Providence fleet. Both cars came to Maine in 1934, and operated from Sanford to Springvale until service was discontinued on April 1, 1947, and a ceremony was held turning the car over to the museum. While No. 88 is in an overall relatively good state of preservation at Seashore, its underframe suffers badly from road salt corrosion.
