When delivered to the Greater Portland Transportation Company in 1969, the 500s, as they were known, were in excellent condition considering they were used. The ex-Pacific Electric Lines buses were not liked by the Portland drivers because of their large size and they weren't the best to use in the winter. Since the 500s were built for California use, they didn't have the factory installed dash heaters. For winter use, Portland Transportation installed a heater under the driver's seat, but this most of the time did little for comfort. Aside from the lack of heat in the winter, these buses were often favorites with riders. Because the buses were wider and longer than the conventional buses riders were accustomed too, there was more leg room and the aisle was wider. Often, it was these buses that rode on Portland's streets the best because of the long wheelbase. In 1976, the 500's were bumped from city service to school transportation when newer buses arrived.
