FACES OF
RAILROADING, Portraits of
America's Greatest Industry
by Carl A. Swanson. A tribute to the people who dedicated their
careers to the great American railroad industry during its Golden
Years. This book celebrates the personality of the railroad industry

continent's growth and laid the groundwork for the vast industry we
enjoy today. In this book you will (1) sense what it was like to
command a locomotive, (2) Learn how the railroads put America on
standard time, (3) Revisit the days when the depot was the heart of
the community, (4) Enjoy the luxury passenger trains of the postwar
years, and (5) Tour backshops where trains were maintained.

the story of the Great Northern Railway, concentrating on the
western half, the Lines West, which conquered both the rocky and

new edition, made with the original page negatives, restores the
quality of the first edition while updating and replacing some
photographs and adding a color section and an index. 206 pages, 6

mind in 1875 was nothing less than America's first interstate

railroad, operated in concert rather than independently, and
providing a meal-stop food service that would attract, rather than
repel, passengers". This book contains 200-plus vintage

Railway Album, WWII Photographs
Volume 3 - Plantation Railways on Oahu with
photographs by Victor Norton, Jr.,
Bill Blewett, Bob Zinsmeister, Grant Oakes, Jr., Kent Cochrane and
Vitaly Uzoff, written by Gale E. Treiber.
From the time of the Oahu Railway and Land company's inception,
products of Oahu's sugar plantations were its principal source of
revenue. By the time the railroad reached its terminus at Kahuku in
1899 it had tied six of Oahu's seven major sugar mills to the port
of Honolulu. Plantation railways supplied sugar stalks to the
mills. This volume
highlights the following sugar plantation railways on Oahu: (1)
Honolulu Plantation Co., AIEA - 36" gauge, (2) Oahu Sugar Co.,
Waipahu - 36" gauge, (3) Ewa Plantation Co., Ewa - 36" gauge. (4)
Waianae Sugar Co., Waianae - 30" gauge, (5) Waialua Agriculture Co.,
Waialua - 36" gauge, (6) Kahuku Plantation Co., Kahuku - 36" gauge,
and (7) Waimanalo Sugar Co., Waimanalo - 36" gauge. 72 pages, B&W

Volume 4 - Plantation Railways on Kauai and the Remaining Islands
with
photographs by Victor Norton, Jr., written by Gale E. Treiber.
The original plan for the Hawaiian Railway Album series did not
include this fourth volume. However it was discovered that it was
necessary to create an additional volume for Victor Norton's Kauai
photographs. Of all the photographs he snapped, these are the
rarest. For many of the locomotives presented in this album, these
are the only known photographs that show them in their working
environment. (1)

Main
Lines, Rebirth of the North
American Railroads, 1970-2002
– Richard Saunders, Jr. Rising from the corporate wreckage of the
1970s, when even the nation's largest railroad had filed for
bankruptcy, American railroads are once again a major part of the
global economy. By 2002, American railroads carried five times the
tonnage they had hauled in their former heyday and they did this
with one-tenth of the employees. This is the story of how this
revolution happened. (2003) Northern Illinois Press.

Mountain
Railroads of New York State, Volume One,
Where did the Tracks Go in the Western Adirondacks? by
Michael Kudish.
A 496 page volume called "Railroads of the Adirondacks: A History"
was published in 1996. It went out of print in 2001. So much
additional detail had accumulated by that time that a major revision
was needed. A single volume of 1,000 pages would be extremely
cumbersome, resulting in a decision to publish in four separate,
slimmer, portable volumes including one on the Catskills. This is
the first of the volumes. The primary intent of the volumes is to
assist the reader in the location of railroad grades, primarily
abandoned, in the field. This volume covers, by geography, railroads
connecting with the New York Central's Ottawa and Saint Lawrence
divisions. 264 pages, very limited B&W photos, extensive maps and
diagrams of each railroad and also by industries, (2005) Purple
Mountain Press

numbering will be continuous through the four volumes. This volume

31 and ends with Chapter 50. The central portion of the Adirondacks
is covered, concentrating on the New York Central's Adirondack
Division from Herkimer and Utica to Malone Junction and Lake Placid.
All its branches and connecting lines are described, including
operations by the current Adirondack Scenic Railroad. 300 pages, very limited B&W photos, extensive maps and
diagrams of each railroad and also by industries, (2007) Purple
